When you go to buy a new gaming monitor, you’ll come across ‘Hertz’ in the product specs. But how many of us understand exactly what Hertz is, and how they affect our gaming experience? What is Refresh Rate? How it is important to know?

Almost all Peoples thinks “The higher the number of pixels, the better it is.” A 4K Ultra HD Television with a screen resolution of 38402160 pixels is better than a regular standard HD TV with 19201080 pixels. Are we correct in assuming this? As you will think that 4K one has more pixels, so it will be better. To my surprise, this is not entirely correct.

Why does it Need to Know Before Buying a Monitor or TV?

Before buying a TV, we focus on its specification like pixel, size, Smart TV, or not. But there are many other things you have to look at, such as what is Refresh rate of the TV, color accuracy, and contrast ratio. What is the refresh rate?–The concept of refresh rate originated in the last century with the invention of movie projectors. Like, when you have a TV with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, it necessarily means that the TV changes the images 60 times in a second.

What is Refresh Rate

This means that a single image stays on the screen for a total time of 1/60th of a second, it is measured in Hertz. Modern TVs nowadays have technology that can increase the rate to 120 Hz (120 frames per second) or even 240 Hz in the case of 1080p HD TVs. Keeping a monitor’s refresh rate set at 60 Hz to 90 Hz is best for most. It refers to the number of frames a television can show per second. It’s measured in Hertz, which is a unit of frequency.

Refresh Rate in TV

A TV with a 60Hz refresh rate can display 60 images per second. Measured as Hertz or Frame per Second ( FPS). Some TV manufacturers in the market claim that their TVs offer a refresh rate of 480 Hz, 600 Hz, or even 960 Hz. Is that true? It will be surprising for you that this is purely a marketing trick to attract attention. Most present-day 4K TVs still only have a refresh rate of 60 Hz or at best 120 Hz. Now you might know what is refresh rate and its concept.

How does it Affect Gaming?

One of the effects of having a slow refresh rate or response time is that an image can look blurred. Our brain can perceive an image to be blurry because our eyes naturally track the movement of an image on-screen, This can happen for a couple of different reasons.

On a modern flat-panel LCD monitor, you won’t see any flickering with a lower refresh rate. However, a higher rate results in a much smoother picture. That’s why expensive monitors designed for gaming advertise high rates like 144 Hz or 240 Hz, which is a big step up from the typical PC display’s 60 Hz refresh rate. So a better refresh rate is better when viewing pictures with fast motion. Now you probably know What is the refresh rate.

However, most smartphone companies are featuring a high refresh rate in smartphones. Like Poco X2 has 120 Hz of a refresh, One Plus Nord have 90 Hz with Amoled Display. Thereby scrolling or daily usage experience be different from normal refresh rate display.
