Last Year, the government of India banned Chinese apps. The ban was announced when the conflict happened between two countries at the Indo-China border in Galwan valley.

The Government of India had claimed Tik Tok apps are using data illegally and collecting information from users. TikTok claimed that the data stored is based outside of China and is not “subject to Chinese law”.

Truth: Why did TikTok ban in India?

The app is designed to be addictive, with an unlimited stream of videos at around 30 seconds each, making it hard to get bored. It’s incredibly easy to fall down the TikTok hole and suddenly reemerge hours later having lost an entire day.

You would be surprised to know that in India, over 120 million monthly active users, most of whom are children and teenagers.

People were given various types of challenges across platforms ranging from easy to extremely harmful.

  1. A light-hearted and prosocial challenge is the ‘Ice bucket challenge’, which involves pouring a bucket of ice-cold water over a person’s head to promote themselves and earn money.
  2. A harmful challenge is the ‘Cinnamon challenge’, which requires participants to swallow a spoon full of ground cinnamon powder without any liquids.
  3. Another extreme challenge is the ‘Blue whale challenge’, which has gained the attention of users.

In addition, Thousands of users committed suicide due to Tik Tok in past few years. The video challenges among themselves are the only reason to kill himself. Consequently, the Government had to take action against tik tok. Eventually, they banned tik-tok in India.

Case I: S Ramadoss, the founder of Tamil Nadu’s Pattali Makkal Katchi Party in South India, had spoken of banning this app for the first time. He said that the app promotes sexual perversions and misleads the youth.

Case II: While making videos on riding bikes, one person died and his friend got seriously injured while making videos on Tik Tok riding bikes. The accident occurred after these youths’ bikes collided with a truck.

The web series Escaype Live is quite similar to the Tik Tok app. In the show, escaype live is a Chinese video-sharing app that has come to India (remember TikTok?) and has started a competition for all its users. Whoever gets the most ‘diamonds’ (a kind of super like) on their videos in a month will win ₹3 crores.
