Ransomware attack in Android Devices

Mobile ransomware is a form of malware that affects mobile devices. A cybercriminal can use mobile malware to steal sensitive data from a smartphone or lock a device. Before demanding payment to return, the data to the user or unlock the device.

Sometimes people are tricked into accidentally downloading mobile ransomware through social networking schemes because they think they are downloading innocent content or critical software.

Ransomware Attack

After the malware is downloaded onto a device, it will show a fake message accusing the victim of unlawful engagement before encrypting files and locking the phone. After it, the payment is processed, often via Bitcoin, the ransomware will send a code to unlock the phone or decrypt the data.

There are two types of ransomware:

  • Lock-screen ransomware
  • Crypto-ransomware

Lock-screen ransomware attacks the device from a system level, changing the PIN/password or overlaying a window over all other apps and demanding a ransom to allow the use of the device again.

Crypto-ransomware actually encrypts the files on the device and demands a ransom to have them unencrypted.  However, Both types of ransomware have wreaked havoc on individuals and businesses for many years, mostly on the Windows platform, causing major financial and data losses.

Therefore, The fact that this type of malware has made its way to the Android ecosystem, coupled with the increased use of mobile devices to store valuable company IP, means potentially severe implications for your business without the right protection in place.
